SISWP Federation Project 2006 - 2008; Hands Across Borders

Past projects have included:

  • Halt Family Violence in Papua New Guinea
  • Support research into Alzheimer's Disease

The current project - Hands Across Borders was nominated by Soroptimist International Dusit, Thailand and is bringing health, education and economic opportunities to Sampovloun, Cambodia.

Some statistics we were presented with prior to undertaking this project were:

  • 79% live below the poverty line in rural communities
  • 66% of the rural population rely on unsafe water sources
  • The under-5 mortality rate is 124 per 1,000 live births; the maternal mortality rate is 427 per 100,000 live births
  • 15% of children under 6 months and 53% of children between the age of 3 and 5 have stunted growth
  • 21% of 15-49 year-old women are underweight
  • Literacy rates are among the lowest in the ASEAN region at 68% (58% for females)

Plan of Action in Sampovloun

Phase 1
Deliver 50% of the basic supplies - water filtration system, books, shoes, toilet blocks, medicine, and hospital supplies. Paint school classrooms and create a clean-up campaign at the school.
(Q1-Q2 2006)

Phase 2
Begin to establish clinics and educational programs at the school and hospital.
(Q3-Q4 2006)

Phase 3
Deliver remaining equipment and supplies. S.I. Dusit will complete the toilet blocks and provide Sampovloun with the community’s first ambulance.
(Q1-Q2 2007)

Phase 4
Assist women in establishing an income-generating project.
(Q3-Q4 2007)
