Focus:
Work for universal primary education and access to lifelong learning for women and girls
Overview
Save The Children was established in Queensland in 1919 and is part of the International Network of Save The Children who focus on the protection of children’s rights, advocating for prevention of child abuse and neglect and provision of access to nutrition, primary health care and basic education. In Queensland, Save The Children have five mobile vans, which are professionally staffed that operate in the Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, and Tweed/Gold Coast areas. This outreach service primarily focuses on assisting families living in socially isolated areas. The service has been extended to include visits to the two women’s correctional facilities in Brisbane and working in partnership with the Larrakia Nation and Karu Aboriginal Child Care Agency to support indigenous families.
SI Brisbane City works in close partnership with many local and international organisations that assist disadvantaged women and children. Our work with the Queensland Branch of Save The Children Fund has continued during 2006 to support young families living in caravan parks on the fringes of Brisbane. To Club has provided gifts for Mother’s Day for the children to give to their mother, donated hand-knitted children’s beanies, blankets and children’s clothes and toys. Members have also collected children’s books, library bags, musical instruments and school supplies (bags, pencils, lunch boxes, drink containers). Each year in October, The Gap Lions Club hosts a large Garage Sale. Club Members volunteer their time to help price and sort through the items. Any unsold items are offered to the Club to support the Mobile Play Scheme Activities.
