Hospital Emergency Care Packs
in conjunction with Royal Women’s Hospital Brisbane - target group Mothers and Babies
Focus:
HEALTH C) Decrease maternal and infant mortality rates
Reporting Date:
31 December 2007
Overview:
-
What we did: For the past five years, SI Brisbane City has been providing gift packs for new born babies and emergency care packs to the Royal Women’s Hospital. The babies’ packs include clothes, hand-knitted booties, teddies and disposable nappies. Woven labels that read “A gift from Soroptimists” have been purchased and are stitched to all knitted items prior to distribution. The packs are for women who are admitted to hospital in an emergency and contain toiletries and personal care items.
-
Why we did it. Safe Motherhood Initiatives – Club Members are aware that globally several million women die each year from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth and that many more suffer permanent damage to their health. At a local level SIBC supports the aims of the World Health Organisation’s Safe Motherhood Initiative, by working with local maternity hospitals.
-
How we did it: Club members, families and friends donate wool to our volunteer knitters to make the babies clothes and the teddies. Through the Club Project Fund an allocation of $150 was provided to purchase essential items for the Emergency Care Packs for Mothers. Club members and friends collect sample sizes of toiletries that are included in the packs. Each pack costs around $7.50. The Club plans to seek support from local businesses, manufacturers and the community (via a media campaign) to collect items for this project.
-
Results and recommendations: This has been a very successful partnership project to support women and children and could easily be replicated by all SI Clubs if they contact the social worker at their local hospital. Each care pack contains a brochure and information about Soroptimist International to raise awareness of our projects.
