PES Fight Sexual Slavery – World Cup – Germany 2006
in conjunction with SI Chatliners, members of SI Europe and Party of European Socialists (PES)
Reporting Date:
12 November 2006
Focus:
HUMAN RIGHTS / STATUS OF WOMEN
[B] Eliminate trafficking of human beings especially women and girls
Overview:
-
What we did - SI Chatliner Lisbeth Hass (SI Denmark) raised the awareness of SI members and sought our assistance to participate in the Party of European Socialists (PES) E-Petition to protest the illegal trafficking into Germany of women forced to work as prostitutes during the World Cup Soccer series. The aim of the PES is to bring together the Socialist, Social Democratic and Labour Parties of the European Union (EU). This includes a collaborative approach to common policies, on issues such as trafficking and the sexual exploitation of women. It was estimated that the number of women who could be at risk of being trafficked ranged between 40,000 to over 100,000 mainly from the poorer nations of Eastern Europe and the Balkans. SI Brisbane City Club Members circulated the PES E-Petition details throughout their networks and encouraged family and friends to participate in the on-line survey to prevent this human rights violation.
-
Why we did it – Our Club has maintained a strong focus in the programme area of HR/SW to eliminate all forms of violence against women – in particular Trafficking. The SI Position Statement on Where We Stand on Trafficking also calls for governments to establish comprehensive policies and programmes that eliminate the root causes of trafficking and to address the needs of the victims and supports the UN Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime and its Protocol on Trafficking.
-
How we did it – SI Brisbane City members discussed the issue at a Club Meeting and participated in discussions on the SI Chatline. It was agreed to forward details to join the PES E-Petition to family, friends and colleagues. During the campaign, SI Chatliner, Lisbeth Hass (SI Denmark) continued to circulate updates provided by PES.
-
Results and recommendations – The global awareness that was raised via the PES E-Petition Campaign was very successful and resulted in many Government leaders signing the petition. 42 Signatories were recorded for Australia – 7 of these were from SI Brisbane City Club Members and friends. Further details can be accessed via the PES Website - SIGNATORIES TO THE PETITION.
