AFESIP CAMBODIA is a non-governmental, non-partisan, and non-religious organization established at the grass-root level in Cambodia in 1996. They care for those victimised of trafficking and sex slavery. AFESIP's co-founder is Somaly Mam, herself a victim of slavery and who now is one of the most prolific activists fighting sexual slavery in the world today.

Aims and Objectives

  • "To combat trafficking in women and girls for sex slavery
  • To provide holistic care and recovery for those rescued from sex slavery
  • To provide occupational skills
  • To reintegrate those rescued into the community through financial independence in a sustainable and innovative manner.

AFESIP CAMBODIA also seeks to combat the causes and consequences of trafficking in persons for sexual exploitation through:

  • Outreach work in HIV/AIDS prevention
  • Advocacy and campaigning
  • Representation and participation in women's issues at national, regional and international forums."

The acronym AFESIP comes from  “Agir Pour les Femmes en Situation Précaire” which when translated in English is something like: “Acting for Women in Distressing Circumstances.”

Their strategy is to:

  • "protect victims
  • use the victim centered approached to care for victims
  • develop and implement regional strategies to repatriate victims and follow up the case for up to 3 years
  • reintegrate victims and follow the case for up to 3 years.

AFESIP CAMBODIA rehabilitation objectives are first and foremost, the protection of victims; second, to implement the victim centered approach through holistic care and welcome any persons who are willing to leave sex slavery conditions to our three residential centres with the long term goal of reintegration into society. The components are as follows:

  • Investigations / Rescue Operations
  • Legal Support
  • Center
  • Health Care
  • Psychology
  • Education & Training
  • Repatriate
  • Reintegration
  • Follow-up"

AFESIP offer a variety of ways for you to help which include to donate financially or to volunteer to help them. Note that volunteers should know that internships typically require a 3-6 or 6-12 month commitment although they will consider applicants for shorter time periods if they have specific skills or experience which fills our needs at the time of application. You can also seek out and purchase the book "The Road of Lost Innocence" by Somaly Mam about the life of Somaly Mam and the reflection of action taken against human trafficking in Cambodia. By purchasing through the Amazon.com link to the right, you will be helping us raise funds for our own club projects.

Soroptimist International Brisbane City have no direct association with AFESIP but their organisation's mission is directly aligned with some of our objectives.
